Aura - Quick Check Overview

The Aura Quick Check mode is an easy way to confirm your Aura Servos are moving in the correct directions.

While the Servo Port Direction can be adjusted for Aileron, Elevator and Rudder using just your Transmitter for Aura 5 and Aura 8/Aura 8 Pro/Aura 12 Pro firmware v1.24+, you may need to Aura Config Tool to make adjustments while Quick Check is active. We will often refer to the Aura Config Tool as the ACT.

First, check the control surfaces move in the correct direction when responding to a Aura Gyro Correction.

  • There are only 2 ways to affect the direction a Servo will travel when responding to Gyro Corrections:
    • Aura Orientation
    • Servo Direction in the Servo Tab

Next, check the control surfaces move in the correct direction when responding to Transmitter Stick Input.

  • There are 4 main ways to affect the direction a Servo will travel when responding to Transmitter Stick Inputs:
    • Channel Direction in the Transmitter
    • Input Polarity Mapping in Aura in the Setup Tab
    • Servo Port Output Mix Scale in the Servo Tab
    • Servo Direction in the Servo Tab

Quick Check - How To

How To: Start Quick Check

  • Before starting Quick Check, make sure the Propeller is removed or safe!
  • Make sure the Aura is receiving a valid signal from the Receiver with the Transmitter ON

  • For Aura 8/Aura 8 Pro/Aura 12 Pro, use the Aura Config Tool to start Quick Check
    • Follow these directions to Install the Aura Config Tool on Windows if you haven't installed it already
    • Plug a Micro USB cable into Aura, click the Connect button, click the Quick Actions-->Quick Check menu bar, click Start Quick Check
    • The Aura will enter the Quick Check mode and flash the Green LED.

  • For Aura 5, press and hold both buttons to start Quick Check
    • The Aura will enter the Quick Check mode and flash the Green LED.

How To: Check Gyro Corrections

  • Once Quick Check has started, Roll the airframe and the servos will deflect.
    • The appropriate servos should move in a direction that would bring the airframe back to level.
    • For example, if Rolled to the right, the Aileron servos should move in a direction that would roll the wings back left to to level.
  • Return the airframe to level and repeat this test for a Pitch motion and a Yaw motion.
  • Confirm that the correct servos move in the correct direction matching the chart below.
  • Add graphic of correct movement here

How To: Fix Gyro Correction Direction if Necessary

  • If the Servo moves in the wrong direction for a given motion (ex --> The Right Aileron servo moves up when the Airplane is Rolled to the Right)
    • This indicates the Servo Direction must be changed in the Aura.
    • For any Aura 5:
      • Hold the Transmitter stick for that Servo at full travel for 5 seconds until Aura reverses the Servo Direction.
    • For Aura 8/Aura 8 Pro/Aura 12 Pro with firmware v1.24+:
      • Hold the Transmitter stick for that Servo at full travel for 5 seconds until Aura reverses the Servo Direction.
    • For Aura 8/Aura 8 Pro/Aura 12 Pro with firmware v1.23 or earlier:
      • Exit Quick Check
      • Click Connect, then click Read All From Aura
      • Confirm the Aura Orientation the Setup tab matches how the Aura is mounted. If not, remount the Aura to Match or update the Aura Orientation in the ACT.
      • If the Aura Orientation is correct, change the Direction in the Servo Port tab for the appropriate Servo Port.

  • If the wrong Servo moves for a given motion (ex --> the Elevator moves when the Airplane is Rolled to the Right):
    • There are 2 likely causes:
      • The Servos are plugged in incorrect order -OR-
      • There is a difference between the Orientation the Aura is physically mounted in the airframe and its configured Aura Orientation in the Aura.
    • First, double check the Servo wires are plugged into their correct Servo Ports
    • If the Servos are plugged in correctly:
      • Remount the Aura to match the configured Aura Orientation in the Aura -OR-
      • Use the ACT to make the Aura Orientation in the Aura match the Orientation of how the Aura is physically mounted.*

How To: Check Transmitter Stick Directions and Fix if Necessary

  • When moving the Transmitter sticks, the control surface movements should match the graphic below:
  • Add graphic of correct movement here

  • The Aura configures itself with a default Channel Order and Input Polarity Map for a given Transmitter/Receiver combination.
  • If the Aura Gyro Correction directions move correctly and the Transmitter Stick command moves the surface in the incorrect direction, there is most likely a mismatch between the actual Transmitter Stick Direction and the expected Aura Input Polarity
    • This most often occurs when an Transmitter channel is Reversed in the Transmitter from the default transmitter model convention -OR-
    • The Aura is assuming the wrong type of transmitter/receiver combination (ex --> FrSky SBUS vs Futaba SBUS)

  • With the airframe sitting flat and stationary, move the Transmitter stick and check the correct surfaces move in the correct direction.
    • If the surface moves in the wrong direction (ex --> The Right Aileron servo moves Down when the Aileron Stick is moved Right):
      • There is most likely a mismatch between the actual Transmitter Stick Polarity and the expected Aura Input Polarity
      • Reverse the channel in your Transmitter -OR- or change the Aura Input Polarity in the Transmitter Inputs configuration-->Input Polarity tab in the Setup tab of the ACT
      • You can also use the Learn the Transmitter in Setup Tab of the Aura Config Tool if Live Data is enabled

    • If the wrong surfaces moves (ex --> The Elevator moves when the Aileron Stick is moved Right):
      • There is most likely a mismatch between the actual Transmitter Channel Order and the expected Aura Channel Order
      • Change the Channel order in your Transmitter -OR- or change the Aura Channel Order in the Transmitter Inputs configuration--> Digital Setup tab in the Setup tab of the ACT
      • You can also use the Learn the Transmitter in Setup Tab of the Aura Config Tool if Live Data is enabled

  • Note: For advanced features like Crow or Live Wing, the Servo Port Output Mix Scale may need to be changed.
    • For example, if you had a Throttle mixed to Ch22 for a Crow when the throttle is low, you can adjust the sign on the Servo Port Output Mix Scale so that the Crow moves the surface up or down.

Remember, Servo Direction option in the Servo Tab directly affects the Gyro Correction direction.

If the Gyro Correction directions are correct, but the Transmitter Stick Inputs are incorrect, you most likely have a mismatch between the actual Transmitter Stick Direction and the expected Aura Input Polarity in Aura.

  • After making any changes in the Transmitter or ACT (and clicking 'Write All to Aura'), make sure to retest all Gyro Correction Directions and Transmitter Stick Directions.

Exit and Restart Aura

  • Click the 'Close and Restart Aura' button to exit Quick Check Mode and restart the Aura
    • Optionally, enable the 'Live Data' option in the Aura Config Tool and confirm the Transmitter Verification graphic movements match your stick movements in the Setup Tab
