Larger Aircaft Installation Notes

General Information

While some of this is written from a Spektrum context, the same principles apply to all larger aircraft installations. Maximize you Receiver installation for path and orientation diversity. Have at least TWO power paths from at least TWO batteries to your Receiver and you Aura. We recommend the same remote receiver quantity and power separation and redundancy with or without an Aura installed.

Note on Spektrum Remote Receiver Use and Ignition and Large Aircraft - Important

Flex Innovations has done extensive testing using 2 Spektrum Brand DSMX Remote Receivers attached directly to Aura (A+B Diversity) in several 33-70cc aircraft. Our testing has always been successful and completely without issue.
However, after reviewing the overall situation and experience in the field and noting many variables including:

  • Availability of an increasing variety of SRXL capable receivers including low cost options
  • Installations variations by users (location, orientation, and path)
  • Differences in power system components and configuration, and potential for varying degrees of ignition noise.
  • Different accessories installed such as ignition power and switching components.
  • Different flying styles (distance) and environment of flying site.
  • Airplane material (composite/carbon) and complexity (smoke pump, canisters)
  • Remote Receiver connection cable/connector fatigue/vulnerability particularly in high vibration environments and long term use
  • Variations in transmitter generations and output/data quality

We have opted NOT to ‘suggest’ this installation to our customer in Spark Ignition and larger Electric, and Turbine aircraft and instead suggest an install with more redundancy in this application (SRXL).

From our experience in Spektrum installs in these aircraft, we suggest*:

A conservative Spektrum install in a 50cc and larger aircraft with Aura would include one of following ‘SRXL’ (X-Plus) capable receivers with 3 or preferably 4 remote receiver/antenna and with 2-3 cables providing power to Aura (Remove the signal wire from jumpers used ONLY for power. Use Y-harnesses to connect additional power to Aura if empty ports are not available). Installations NOT using Aura can choose a similar receiver that need not include an 'SRXL/X-plus' port.

  • AR12120 (12 Channel Power Safe)
  • AR12020 (12 Channel conventional power)
  • AR9020 (9 Channel conventional power)

NOTE: At this time, Spektrum Receivers: AR9130T, AR12300T, and AR20300T are NOT permitted for use with Aura due to the Spektrum Recall (Link)

From our experience in all installs in these aircraft, we suggest*:

In 50cc and larger aircraft with Aura include a high-end receiver with 2-3 cables providing power to Aura (Remove the signal wire from jumpers used ONLY for power. Use Y-harnesses to connect additional power to Aura if empty ports are not available).

In 30cc aircraft, similar concepts are recommended, but with appropriately sized batteries and wires, etc.
Other Receiver brands should follow similar concepts with minimum Dual Power Paths. We suggest two batteries capable of high current with minimum two power input paths to the on-board electronics (Receiver, Aura, etc).

On Aura installs,connect the throttle servo to the Radio Receiver port rather than Aura.

Further radio setup/install tips for highest reliability based on our teams many years of industry experience:

  • Do not attach ignition power leads to your receiver or Aura bus. Power the ignition independently of the receiver and Aura.
  • Inspect your ignition components carefully and replace if shielding shows any sign of breaking down.
  • Route antenna and remote Rx cables far away from ignition components to reduce the chance of noise getting directly into the communications cables.
  • If you are (likely) an Aura Config Tool user, Turn off Auto-Detect Signal, and Allow Quick Setup on the Setup Tab when configuring Aura.
