Hitec Installation Notes and Equipment Selection

Note: This page is a Draft/Work in Progress. We request feedback from customers to make this page better based on your experience.

E-mail Aura Support

There are two ways to connect the Aura to your Hitec Receiver:

  • S.Bus (SL or Single Line is the Hitec implementation of Futaba S.Bus)
  • Traditional PWM Servo Connection

NOTE: Any recommendations are based on years of knowledge and product use and are informational only.

  • We do not 'specify' radio installations. Consult your radio manufacturer for radio information.
  • We test and support the use of genuine Hitec brand equipment.

Hitec S.Bus

  • Preferred way to connect the Aura to select Hitec Receivers
  • We tested with a A9X Transmitter and a Optima SL (Single Line) 8 Channel Receiver
  • S.Bus - S.Bus is serial data on one wire (Digital). It gives the Aura knowledge of all of the available Hitec channels.
    • Aura will follow the Failsafe outputs of the Hitec Receiver.
    • Recommended for all aircraft types
    • S.Bus from the Rx's SL port plugs into Aura Port B (Servo Bus) via one male to male servo cable
    • Precise digital Data
    • Availability of all 8 Aura Ports as outputs
    • Hitec Receiver Ports are also active and available for use
Hitec install in Flex Cessna. Connections to the Optima SL Rx are the SL (data) Port to Aura Port B, and the Hitec receiver's Throttle Port to the ESC/BEC/Throttle Servo

Notes on using Hitec S.Bus

  • These notes supplement (add to/modify) the normal Transmitter setup (Aura Instructions) that you should follow.
  • Connect the Recievers SL Port to the Aura Servo Port B with a male to male servo type connector
  • Hitec has elected to use the Futaba Header Bytes ID Code, so the Aura will work and/or auto-detect as a "Futaba S.Bus"
  • Hitec has duplicated some of the Futaba data format standards such as Channel Order in the data
  • Hitec has chosen NOT to duplicate other Futaba data standards such as channel center data values, and default direction of travel away from center.

Hitec S.Bus Transmitter Programming/Changes

  • Due to specific variations in the Hitec S.Bus conventions, you must make some additional changes to your Hitec Transmitter settings in order to match the Futaba 'standards'
    • Reverse specified Transmitter Channels
      • Reverse the Elevator Channel (required to meet Futaba/Aura Standard)
      • Reverse the Throttle Channel (To use the Aura throttle port for an ESC, else as required)
      • Reverse the Flap Channel (If needed to match Futaba, or as required)
    • Subtrim Transmitter Settings (To emulate Futaba Centers, Aura expects CENTERED Data, otherwise you may see trim changes with Flight Mode change). You can Verify/Fine Tune these settings using the Aura Config Tool's "Input Monitor" on Setup Tab with 'Live Data' ON per below.
      • Aileron to +7
      • Elevator to -7
      • Rudder to +7
      • Gear to +7 typical
      • Flap to +7 or as needed
      • Throttle to -7 or as needed
      • Check that the trim levers are centered before setup
    • Adjust Transmitter EPA (Travel) Settings for flight controls to make the Tx equivalent to a Futaba at +-125%. You can Verify/Fine Tune these settings using the Aura Config Tool's "Input Monitor" on Setup Tab with 'Live Data' ON per below.
      • Aileron Left and Right to 133%
      • Elevator Up and Down to 133%
      • Rudder Left to 140%, Right to 133% (output not symmetric in Tx's we evaluated)
      • CH5/Gear to 100% in both directions (or as required)
  • You can save a copy of this 'basic' Tx program in you transmitter to copy as a starting point for future Aura equipped models. All will start from the same foundation.
  • Aura will be set/used/auto-detected as a FUTABA -> SBUS -> SERVO PORT B. Aura will otherwise work completely normally, you can even fly the PNP models (via Auto-Detect) with no need to change any Aura settings.

You can check the data input to Aura using the Aura Config Tool (Windows App) with the system all connected and active using 'Live Data' feature in the Aura Config Tool

  • Turn on the Config Tools Live Data, and look a the bottom of the Setup Tab
    • The simulated sticks should track the movement of the transmitter sticks (direction)
    • The Aura Monitor's Center Data of Aileron, Elevator, and Rudder should be 0% (adjust Tx subtrim as needed)
      • If the Data is not 'Centered' (0% on Aura Input Monitor), you may see trim changes when changing Aura Flight Modes
    • The Travel for Aileron, Elevator, and Rudder should be very close to +-125% (adjust EPA as needed)

Before you fly with Hitec S.Bus

  • Make sure to run and pass the Transmitter AND Sensor tests!
  • Perform a range test per Hitec instructions

Traditional PWM Servo Connections

  • Least preferred
  • Recommended for all aircraft types
  • Supports virtually all receivers
  • Limits port availability.
    • Typically Aura will be configured with 4 inputs and 4 outputs with PWM.
    • See Aura or SPNP Aircraft instructions for Port Connections.
    • Working Rx Ports other than Aileron, Elevator, Rudder, and Flight Mode (default is CH5) will be available (Receiver bus).
  • See notes above, use Aura input monitor and methods above to acheive correct input direction and 0 +-125% for Aileron, Elevator, and Rudder
